NGO 65B 1

NGO 65B has published a series of workbooks that contain brain exercises to be done by older people with their adult children. NGO 65B holds the trademark Särts (a sizzle). Three volumes have been created in cooperation with the Estonian Rescue Board.

Särts

NGO 65B organises annual meetings for mutual learning. One of the members hosts the meeting and there are also invited local quests, e.g. instructor of a chair dance, a band play, cajon play, etc. We have had meetings in Leevi, Imavere, Saku, Pärnu, Väike-Maarja, Elva, Äksi, Kuressaare, Helsingi, and Tapa.

NGO 65B 2 Into to NGO 65B meetings

NGO 65B has been a strategic partner for the Ministry of Social Affairs through the partnership with NGO Kuldne Liiga. The 65B belongs to the Estonian Network NOVA led by Kuldne Liiga.

There are several international projects in which 65B has been a project leader of a partner. In those projects, we have created training courses on older people's memory training, dance movement lessons for seniors, and lectures about normal ageing. In the Nordplus project „Age is not an obstacle II” the following online courses were developed: „Why we need memory training“, „Isometric exercises, the importance of physiotherapy in old age”, „Discovering your hometown with a map” (https://vanuseioletakistuseks.ee/et/vanus-ei-ole-takistuseks-ii-0)

The newsletter Seinaleht, an overview of the senior dance  movement, and all other material are available on the website www.65b.ee (mainly in Estonian).

Kondas Art Collection (Kondase kunstikogu)

What pictures are there on the conference badges and website?

These are pieces of outsider art from the Kondas Centre.

In 2017, the art museum Kondas started visiting Estonian special care institutions with the aim of finding works of art. In 2018, they made an exhibition of these findings dedicated to the 100th birthday of Estonia.

Since then Kondas Centre has steadily continued with field work. Buying works of art for our collection is only one part of the activities (at the moment there are somewhere around 500 works of outsider art), in addition, we have interviewed artists and activity supervisors in the special care institutions.

The centre is involved in several international projects, the largest of which is the outsider art project in the main program of Tartu2024, during which they map the outsider art of Eastern European countries.

They have managed to organize residencies of professional artists in some special care institutions. In 2022, a show with three artists from Estonian Broadcast’s series " How little is needed for happiness " was completed with their participation. Hopefully, they will be able to create a permanent exhibition of outsider art in Kondas in the near future.

Kondas Centre is a municipal art museum in Viljandi, founded in 2003. Its main area of activity is naive art and outsider art, the Centre is dedicated to one of Estonia’s best-known naivists - Paul Kondas.

The senior dance group "Päripidi" from South Estonia, Kanepi village

The senior dance group "Päripidi" from South Estonia, Kanepi village

Senior dance is practiced all over Estonia, but there are only two of about thirty groups where men also dance.

The dance group Päripidi has been developing and introducing senior dance for 16 years, the leader of the group, creator of dances and one of the dancers is 86-year-old Maria Drenkhan.

For the last ten years, Maria Drenkhan has organized the international senior dance festival in Kanep. Around 150 senior dancers who have traveled to Kanepi from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland glide and step in one rhythm in the hall of Estonia's oldest community house.

Why do senior dancers come to the ELLL research conference? Because educational gerontologists know - dance is the best way to keep your brain working even at an advanced age. If you only have time for one hobby and you have to choose between reading, solving crosswords, practicing an instrument, playing board games or dancing, then you have to choose dance. This activity offers five possibilities in one - thinking, moving, communicating, being creative and positive emotions.

Kanepi dancers are already familiar to the members of ELOA, as in 2019 they were the only foreign performers at the ELOA network conference in Ljubljana. If you're interested in learning more about their trip to Ljubljana, then here is the link to a short video.
